Hear O Israel

The Hebrew text from Deuteronomy of the Shema, which begins with, Hear O, Israel, is layered onto the inner section of the long central form of this collage. A layer of thin rice paper was applied over the text and then the Shema was written in English onto that surface. Finally the gold panels of gilded Hebrew text from the Ten Commandments we applied to the surface of the collage in a series of 7 panels.

The 6th chapter of Deuteronomy contains a beloved portion of the Torah known as the Shema, which translated from the Hebrew is "Hear, O Israel." This passage is posted on the doorways of every Jewish home as an affirmation and a declaration of faith in one God.

Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all our strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on you hands and bind them to your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gate. Deut. 6: 4-9 NIV
