Crucifix after Cimabue

The elegantly long and graceful corpus on this cross from the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence demonstrates the influence of the Byzantine icon painting. Cimabue’s oeuvre represented a step forward in the evolution of medieval art as he struggled to include a more human expression and form.
