Russia was converted to Christianity in the 10th century and eventually the Byzantine tradition was very much its own. The most exquisite example of this meeting of two very dissimilar cultures is the stunning Trinity Icon, painted by Andrei Rublev (c. 1360 -1430), the most famous of Russian icon painters. Within Christian iconography the three angels who appeared to Abraham in the Old Testament story have become representative of the three persons of the Trinity.
